Iulia Zyganok: Doing a Master's in the Lebanon “was a challenge to myself and provided me with a remarkable experience of church life ”

livan 4Iulia Zyganok, a 2016 graduate of the Department of Eastern Christian Philology and Eastern Christian
Studies at the Faculty Theology of Saint Tikhon's Orthodox University of the Humanities (STOUH)
successfully defended her Master's thesis in Arabic at the St. John of Damascus Institute of Theology in Balamand and was awarded a record 88 points for it.
Iulia, who simultaneously studied six different Eastern Christian languages at STOUH, did not hesitate to
accept the study placement at the University of Balamand, which proved to be a unique and highlybeneficial experience for her.
She described the relationship between students and teachers as “close” and studying there as being part
of a large and friendly community. Iulia also noted that the skills and knowledge she had obtained in her studies at STOUH were a huge help and made it easier for her to study abroad, even despite some initial difficulties brought about by the difference between the Lebanese dialect of Arabic and the classical language as taught at STOUH.livan 2

church life. It required a great deal of independent academic work. But even more than that, it was a
spiritual experience.”
