STOUH Faculty Present at 18th International Patristic Conference in Oxford

imageFrom August 19-24, 2019, Saint Tikhon's University faculty members Dr. Natalia Kulkova (Associate Professor and Deputy Head of the Department of Ancient Languages and Early Christian Literature, Faculty of Theology); Dr. Georgy Zakharov (Head of the Department of Systematic Theology and Patristics, Faculty of Theology); Dr. Sergei Vorontsov (Senior Instructor in the Department of Philosophy of Religion and Religious Culture, Faculty of Theology); and Elga Kanaeva (an alumna of STOUH's PhD program), took part in the 18th International Conference on Patristic Studies, which convenes in Oxford every four years and brings together hundreds of scholars to discuss research into the legacy of Christian thinkers.

This year, approximately one thousand scholars took part in the International Conference on Patristic Studies, with over fifteen sessions meeting in parallel every day.

Natalia Kulkova participated in a roundtable on the concept of misericordia in the works of Saint Ambrose of Milan with a talk on “Misericordia and the human dignity in St. Ambrose's Works (De officiis, Expositio euangelii secundum Lucam)”.

Georgy Zakharov gave a talk on “Primauté dans l’Eglise ancienne (IIe-Ve siècles): typologie fonctionnelle” in the session on the Patriarchate of Rome.

Sergei Vorontsov spoke on the topic of “Ecclesia in the works of Isidore of Seville: meaning and usage”, in the session on the Iberian tradition.

Elga Kanaeva took part in the roundtable on the Patristic sources of the Hesychast controversy, speaking on “The Patristic sources of Barlaam’s “'Against Latins'” (the paper was supported by an internal grant from STOUH).

The conference materials are to be published in a volume of proceedings, Studia Patristica.
