Ambrosiana

The International Project “Ambrosiana.” The complete works of St. Ambrose of Milan in the Russian language

The first translation and publication of the complete works of St. Ambrose of Milan in Russian with the parallel Latin text: The idea for the project came from an awareness of the lack of a complete and contemporary translation into Russian of the works of St. Ambrose, and, at the same time, from the recognition of the importance of this Father of the Church for Church Tradition, the history of dogma, mystical theology, and the social doctrine of the Church’s relationship with political authorities. To this can be added the great veneration which Orthodox people—and especially Russians—have for this Father of the undivided Church.

The project is the result of the close cooperation of St. Tikhon’s Orthodox University for the Humanities with the St. Ambrose Library (Milan, Italy)—“Veneranda Biblioteca Ambrosiana”—which provided unique research material in the Latin language.

In 2013, at the opening of the 8th “Education Through Books” publications competition, a special prize was awarded to our project in the category “Best Spiritual-Educational Book.” Metropolitan Clement, addressing the rector of St. Tikhon's University Archpriest Vladimir Vorobiev, said that inasmuch as the series of the works of St. Ambrose of Milan is such a unique project, it was impossible not to establish a special prize for this publication.
